HKUST-Sino One-Million-Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021

You can play a role in deciding the winners of the Best Video Award for the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021 AND get a chance to win a GOPRO or AIRPODS PRO!

The Competition has come to the Round 2 assessment. Each shortlisted team has submitted a Production Introduction Poster and Video Pre-recorded Video on Product Introduction. A Product Introduction Period will be held on 16-21 Jun 2021 to display the posters and videos of the shortlisted teams in the Round 2 of the HKUST-Sino One-Million-Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021.

Wanted to join the HKUST-Sino One-Million-Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021 but missed the application deadline? You now have a second chance!

We are pleased to announce that the Competition has come to second round. In this round, shortlisted teams can strengthen their teams by recruiting more members by 10 June. You can look through this list with 32 shortlisted teams (in alphabetic order) to find the team you want to join.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is pleased to announce the HKUST-Sino One-Million-Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021 (“Competition”) will take place in July 2021. The Competition includes an Production Introduction round on June 16-21, 2021, a 3 minute Pitch on July 6, 2021 (Tuesday) followed by a Business Plan Evaluation held on July 21, 2021 (Wednesday).

Witnessing the growth of entrepreneurial activities in our region, the Competition aims to provide a platform for HKUST and surrounding community members an integrative learning experience to create and evaluate new business and to prepare students to start their future career in entrepreneurship. Winners of the Competition can use the cash prize as seed money to build their own company or to further the commercialization of their inventions. To encourage teams with plans utilizing HKUST technologies and/or have members from different schools within HKUST, they will be eligible for additional cash awards, if they are winners of the Platinum, Gold or Silver Awards at the Final Round of judging.

Further to help participants to form a team with those from other local, mainland and international universities and communities, we will continue to provide the Team Forming Platform together with online and offline mixer events for participants to find available team and team members with specific skills and build connection with them. Apart from the Team Forming Platform, this year we will invite faculties to participate in the Competition to match teams with their research and technology via Tech-ship matching, bringing together faculty technologies with entrepreneurship development to create an emerging breed of entrepreneurship with the use of technology.

To attract high quality teams to join force with HKUST students and faculties, this year there are different channels for interested parties to participate in the Competition. Winning teams from internal and external competitions recognized by the Entrepreneurship Center, as well as nominated teams by all schools in HKUST can be fast-tracked to Round 2 of the Competition.

We also newly introduce a student track and are upgrading our HKUST Student Team Awards to encourage more student participation, aiming to strengthen our support to HKUST student startups. For details, please refer section “Team Eligibility for Round 2 Assessment” under “Application & Eligibility

To gather more innovative ideas and foster the entrepreneurial atmosphere in HKUST Community, the Poster Exhibition in the Product Introduction Round will be sized to 90 teams, together with an online product introduction video for online voting from the HKUST Community.

To encourage participants to get their businesses going, and further reinforce the practical focus of this Competition, we have put together a suite of services for all applicants and awardees including company set up support for competition teams. For details, please refer section “In-Kind Awards” under “Awards”.

Additionally, we will continue to have this competition in 8 different regions including this one in our Clear Water Bay Campus. The 3 winning teams will compete with other winning teams from Beijing, Foshan, Guangzhou, Macau, Shenzhen, Yangtse River Delta and Zhongshan in the Grand Final, which will be held later in 2021 in Nansha, Guangzhou.

Participants: The Competition is open to all full-time and part-time students at all levels, post-docs, alumni, researchers, faculty and staff from all departments within HKUST. It is also open to local, mainland and international schools who want to compete in this Competition under the condition that the team must have at least one HKUST faculty or student or alumni or staff.

Submissions: All submissions will be in English and must be submitted online (https://onemilliondollar.ust.hk), no paper entries will be accepted. There will not be a limit on the topics for submission, however, we encourage applicants to focus on the technology and innovation driven business. The topics can be related to nanotechnology, information technology, renewable energy, environment, healthcare, financial services, logistics and social enterprise. Judging Process: The assessment process consists of 4 rounds: 1-page Teaser, Product Introduction Round, 3-minute Pitch and Full Business Plan Presentation which will take place from April to July 2021. For details of the judging process, please refer to “Judging Process”.

Awards: Winners of the HKUST-Sino One-Million-Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2021 will be awarded with cash prizes. The Competition will also provide the participants a chance to introduce their business plans to an international panel of investors and executives, while making a name for themselves within the HKUST community and in Hong Kong.

Application Deadline: We invite interested parties to submit their online applications and 1-page Teaser of their business plan for the Round 1 Assessment on or before April 14, 2021.
